Is the internet and social media really part of the Evil Empire?
You get up and check your Facebook page to see what you’re crazy Uncle Mortimer was up to and did you sister get home from Mexico with all her children or did she leave that child she keeps threatening to leave there? Next thing you know there is an add for a Juicer and you have wanted one of those for a while now. (Not sure how Facebook seemed to know you wanted a juicer, but that is for another article). So you click on the link and check out the add and see a few other kitchen appliances that you have been dreaming about. After all, some people smoke crack while others buy kitchen gadgets that they just know are going to their lives simpler, easier and more glamorous. We could all use a little more simplicity and glamour in our lives. You finally look at the clock in the bottom right hand corner of your screen and realize you have been trolling the internet for an hour and a half and have not gotten anything done you intended BUT you are now the proud owner of a new weed whacker to add to your collection of weed whackers plus you got a great deal on an official Jerry Murad's harmonica. You know the guy that is a renowned Harmonica musician. (Really, you can find them on Youtube, but what can't you find on Youtube?).
Oh Crap, you have even started your to do list you made in Google doc's and need to get things going. So you start on you to do list when your friend from soccer texts you the cutesiest video of a cat and pig smoking cigars and dancing to music from fiddler on the roof and crack up laughing. There is a link at the bottom of the video for more videos from this person, so you click on the link and 53 minutes latter it is time for lunch so you close down your tablet and/or computer, whichever is your device of choice and wonder where did the time ever go?
Sound familiar?
The other day, I was amazed how much time I had spent in the internet and all the different things I found. I save a lot of them in Evernote for the future. If the Evil Empire is about distracting me from things in life, they have been successful in my life. I have spent too much time trying to figure out how to make my home more solar efficient and watching YouTube videos of people who have created robotic animals, but they are really cool!
So I am purposing to watch how much time I spend on the internet and focusing more on my to do list. Every now and then I need to go back to basics, so I am off for Guinness and Wings and watch the NBA Finals. Something that far more productive than sitting in front of my laptop looking for kitchen gadgets on the Internet.
